The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday arrested the Ekiti State Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Toyin Ojo and the Accountant General, Mrs. Oluyemisi Owolabi. They were both arrested by the anti graft agency at the Golden Hall, Chelsea Hotel, Garki, Abuja, Venue of Governor Ayo Fayose’s Presidential Declaration Event.
Notable figures at the event a former deputy governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore; and a former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode.
A short statement by EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, noted that the two officials are now in its custody.
“They were picked up today following their refusal to honour previous invitations for interrogation in relation to pending investigations on the misuse of bailout funds by the Ayodele Fayose administration,” Uwujaren said.
Reno Om0kri, calls it an attempt to stifle opposition.
In his own reaction, Special Adviser on New Media to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, he described the arrest as politically motivated in a bid to cripple him and stifle opposition. He cautioned the APC led Government from taking such an ignoble path.
“The EFCC had said the arrest was necessary following their refusal to honour previous invitations for interrogation in relation to pending investigation on the misuse of bail-out funds by the Fayose administration.
“So Governor Ayo Fayose declares for the 2019 Presidential election today and within hours his finance commissioner and Accountant General are arrested!
“The EFCC could not even pretend and wait a couple of days after Fayose declared before arresting his finance team to cripple him!
“Is this what we should expect as 2019 approaches? Is there still democracy in Nigeria? What type of administration is this?
“If Goodluck Jonathan had done this to Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, would they have been where they are today?
“The APC got to where it is by free and fair elections and they must not remove the ladder that others left intact for them.”
